Branching out for a Green Economy (UNEP)

United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) / July 2011

Animated video highlighting the services and products provided by forests that are essential to every aspect of everyday life. These include regulation of the climate, reducing the impacts of floods and contributing to the livelihood of 1.6 billion people across the world.

The narrator explains that trade based on forests is estimated at around US$330 billion each year. Despite this an area equivalent to 25 football pitches is being destroyed every minute to make way for mining, agriculture and human settlements.

The proposals put forward to tackle current deforestation include carbon finance through REDD+ (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) and sustainable management of forests.
