Green Economy and Sustainable Development: Bringing Back the Social (UNRISD)

United Nations Research Institute for Social Development (UNRISD) / December 2011

Different organisations present their diverse perspectives on the green economy at the UNRISD conference “Green Economy and Sustainable Development: Bringing back the Social Dimension” (2011) including:

  • what the objective of the green economy project is
  • what a green economy would look like in practice
  • importance of the social dimension (poverty and inequality)
  • the kinds of transformations needed to deal with the multiple crises the world faces

Key questions put forward include:

Will the kind of growth promoted under a green economy be within the limits of a finite planet?

Will the green economy have more benefits for the global north or south?

Can we rely on technological innovation to ‘green’ the economy?

Will a green economy transform power relations?
