The Story of REDD: A real solution to deforestation? (FERN)

FERN / April 2012

This animated video looks at the causes of deforestation which leads to local communities losing their livelihoods and human rights abuses.

As a response to climate change the United Nations and World Bank are proposing REDD (Reduced Emissions from Deforestation and Degradation) which will give money to developing countries based on how many carbon emissions have been avoided by not cutting down trees.

The video concludes REDD does not address the causes of deforestation and that for this to happen the global north must reduce its consumption of meat, food, fuel and fibre.

FERN says any solution to deforestation that does not respect the rights of local peoples is both unjust and ineffective. It cannot be dealt with somewhere else by someone else as REDD proposes.
