REDD as part of the solution (UN REDD)

United Nations REDD programme / September 2009

In this video the speakers say the REDD (Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation) programme is crucial to reducing deforestation in developing countries. They call for REDD to be implemented as soon as possible.

According to the speakers forests play a fundamental role because they capture carbon dioxide (15% a year) and at the same time deforestation contributes nearly 20% of global greenhouse gas emissions. REDD is presented as a cost effective way to combat climate change.

They go on to say that if no action is taken it is estimated the last forests will be cut down by 2100. UD$20 billion a year could curb 90% of deforestation. And that the value of ecosystem goods and services from protected areas around the world is estimated at US$4-5 trillion a year.
